Enemies to Lovers
They can’t stand each other, and they can’t stop thinking about each other either. The magic here is that hate and love ask for the same thing, your full attention, and somewhere between the arguments the sparring turns into something neither of them will admit to first.
Fake Dating
A practical arrangement: pretend to be together, convince the family or the ex, then walk away unscathed. Except nobody ever walks away unscathed. Watching two people fake something that is becoming real is one of the great joys of the genre.
Grumpy Sunshine
One of them is a thundercloud, the other is pure golden retriever warmth. He scowls at the entire world, then she walks in and the scowl falters. The moment we all live for is when everyone else realises he’s only ever soft for her.
Forced Proximity
Snowed in, or sharing the last room at the inn. When two people can’t get away from each other, they run out of places to hide what they’re feeling. The setting does the matchmaking, and all they have to do is survive it.
Only One Bed
The trope so beloved it earned its own name. There’s the pause in the doorway, the ‘I’ll take the floor’ that never lasts past midnight. Nothing this small has ever carried this much tension, and long may it continue.
Second Chance
The one that got away comes back. Years have passed, the timing was wrong before, and the history between them means every conversation carries double the weight. These are the love stories that ask whether the right person can arrive at the wrong moment and still be the right person.
Friends to Lovers
They already know everything about each other, which should make it easy and instead makes it terrifying. Falling for your best friend means risking the most important relationship you have. When it works, this is the warmest trope of them all, because the love was there all along.
Marriage of Convenience
Vows first, feelings later. They marry for the inheritance, for the family business, for anything except love, and then love turns up anyway. The slow shift from strangers sharing a surname to something real gets me every single time.
Morally Grey Hero
He’s a villain to everyone else. Dangerous and entirely unrepentant, until it comes to her. The morally grey hero would burn the world down without blinking, which is precisely why it matters that he’d never let a spark near her.
Slow Burn
Slow burn is the long game. Chapters of glances and almost-touches, where every small thing earns its place because we’ve waited so long for it. A well-written slow burn makes a hand on a shoulder feel like a declaration. Patience has never been so rewarded.
Small Town
One high street and one very invested community. Small-town romance gives you a whole cast of neighbours who saw this coming long before the couple did, and a place you’ll miss like a person when the book ends. Cosy, and quietly devastating.
Forbidden Romance
They shouldn’t. Everyone has told them they shouldn’t. Something serious stands between them, loyalty or the rules, and wanting each other anyway is the whole aching point. Forbidden love stories run on the tension between what’s allowed and what’s true.
He Falls First
He’s gone from the moment she walks in, and she has absolutely no idea. Watching him fall hard while she carries on oblivious is instant serotonin. The payoff, when she finally sees what everyone else has seen for two hundred pages, is worth every second of the wait.
Secret Identity
One of them isn’t who they say they are. The billionaire posing as the new temp, the anonymous pen pal sitting three desks away. The truth always comes out at the worst possible moment, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Touch Her and Die
It’s less a threat than a devotion. This is the love interest whose protectiveness runs bone-deep, the one whole armies couldn’t get past if anything ever threatened her. BookTok gave this one its name, and it fits.
Academic Rivals
Enemies to lovers with a reading list. They’re competing for the same prize, matching each other mark for mark, and the rivalry is really just attraction wearing its smartest outfit. Dark academia setting optional, unbearable tension guaranteed.
